Classical Pilates studio at golden hour with reformer

— Classical Pilates · Est. 1987 —

Return to
the body.

A quiet sanctuary in Brooklyn for the original Pilates method — practiced as Joseph intended, on heritage equipment, under the hand of devoted teachers.

Welcome

We are a small, devoted studio practicing classical Pilatesthe way it was first taught. No music. No mirrors. Only breath, spring, and the body's quiet conversation with itself.

01

Heritage equipment

Wooden Reformers, Cadillac, Wunda Chair, Ladder Barrel — each piece built to Joseph's original specifications.

02

Private & duet

Fifty-five minute sessions, one teacher to two students, never more. Attention is the foundation of progress.

03

Considered pace

We move slowly so the body may listen. Strength arrives as a quiet visitor — not a guest you summoned.

On care

"Take care of your body. It is the only place you have to live."

— Jim Rohn

The studio

A room that listens
before it speaks.

Six classical Reformers stand in quiet formation beneath aged oak beams. A Cadillac waits in the corner like a cathedral of springs. Light falls through arched windows the way it has fallen here for forty seasons — patient, generous, slow.

On the body

"The body achieves what the mind believes — and what the breath permits."

— Studio doctrine, Sōma

The method

Six
principles.
One body.

Joseph Pilates left us a complete language for the body. We speak it in its mother tongue.

  1. 01

    Concentration

The mind, gathered. The mind, present. Without it, motion is only motion.

  2. 02

    Control

Every movement begins and ends with intention. Nothing is thrown.

  3. 03

    Centering

Power radiates from the center — what Joseph called the powerhouse.

  4. 04

    Flow

Strength dressed in grace. The body moves as water remembers stone.

  5. 05

    Precision

Better one repetition done well than ten done absently.

  6. 06

    Breath

The first principle and the last. The thread that stitches all others.

On stillness

"In a world that profits from your exhaustion, rest is a quiet revolution."

On returning

"The body remembers what the mind forgets. Come home to it, daily."

— V —

"I came to Sōma after twenty years of being at war with my back. I left, six months later, no longer at war with anything. The studio gave me my body — and a small, daily ceremony of returning to it."

Eleanor V. · student since spring 2022
